SEO helps people find your pages. AEO (answer engine optimization) helps AI tools like Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot pull your words into their answers and credit you for them. One gets you found, the other gets you quoted. And since AEO only works on top of solid SEO, you’ll want both. If you want the wider picture of how brands show up in AI tools, our practical guide to AI search visibility is a good companion read.
Why Answer Engine Optimization Matters Now: What the Data Says
People still search a lot. They just click a lot less. The numbers below come from different studies with different methods, so read them as a rough direction, not gospel.
- Most searches end with no click at all: SparkToro’s research, reported by Search Engine Land, puts it at about 68% of US Google searches between January and April 2026.
- AI Overviews eat into clicks: Ahrefs found that the top-ranked result’s click-through rate was about 58% lower when an AI Overview showed up. Pew saw the same pattern: users clicked a regular result in 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one.
- Getting cited softens the blow: Seer Interactive reported that sources cited inside an AI Overview get roughly 120% more clicks per impression than sources that aren’t. They still earn fewer clicks than a results page with no AI Overview.
- Ranking well isn’t enough anymore: According to Ahrefs, the share of AI Overview citations coming from top-10 pages dropped from 76% in July 2025 to 38% in March 2026. Search Engine Journal notes that Ahrefs improved its methodology between the two studies, so the figures aren’t directly comparable.
- AI Overviews keep spreading: BrightEdge tracked them on about 48% of queries in February 2026, up from roughly 30% a year before.
What Is SEO?
SEO is the practice of earning visibility in regular search results on Google and Bing. It has three parts: technical (can search engines crawl, load and index your pages? Our technical SEO checklist covers the basics), on-page (are your titles, headings, keywords and internal links in order?) and off-page (do other sites link to you?). You judge it by rankings, organic traffic, click-through rate and conversions.
What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
AEO is the practice of making your content easy for answer engines to lift and cite. That covers Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, featured snippets, People Also Ask, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini, Alexa and Siri. It leans on direct answers, a clear page structure, well-defined entities (the brands, products and people you write about) and E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust. You judge it by citations, brand mentions, snippet wins and traffic that arrives from AI tools.
AEO vs GEO vs AIO vs LLMO: What’s the Difference?
The industry hasn’t agreed on one name, so you’ll see all of these:
- AEO: being the answer in snippets, voice results and AI responses.
- GEO (generative engine optimization): optimizing for what tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity generate. Most people use it interchangeably with AEO. We break it down in our guide to generative engine optimization.
- AIO optimization: aimed specifically at Google AI Overviews.
- LLMO: another label for earning citations from large language models.
AEO vs SEO: Comparison Table
Factor | SEO | AEO |
Main goal | Rank pages, earn clicks | Be cited as the answer |
Platforms | Google, Bing | AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, voice assistants |
Queries | Keywords, short and long-tail | Natural-language questions |
Content format | Long-form pages, blogs | Answer blocks, Q&A, lists, tables |
Key metrics | Rankings, traffic, CTR | Citations, mentions, snippet wins |
User outcome | A click to your site | The answer on the results page (zero-click) |
Authority | Backlinks | E-E-A-T, consistent entity data, third-party mentions |
Technical focus | Crawlability, speed | Clean HTML, structured content, optional schema |
Keyword approach | Target keywords | Target questions and entities |
Time to results | Weeks to months | Varies, snippets can move faster |
Key Differences Between AEO and SEO
- The goal: SEO wants the click. AEO wants your brand in the answer, whether or not anyone clicks.
- The queries: SEO chases keywords like “best running shoes.” AEO chases the full question someone would actually ask, like “What are the best running shoes for flat feet?”, plus the brands, products and people tied to it.
- The page structure: A classic SEO article can take its time and build toward a conclusion. An AEO page gives the answer first, right under a heading that asks the question, and explains afterward.
- The technical side: Both need pages that search engines can crawl. AEO puts extra weight on clean, extractable HTML, and structured data can help machines read a page, though it isn’t magic (more on that below).
- The authority signals: SEO has long run on backlinks. AEO still cares about those, but it also looks at who wrote the page, whether your brand details match across the web, and whether trusted third-party sites mention you. Across the AI studies, Reddit, Wikipedia and YouTube turn up as cited sources again and again.
- The measuring stick: SEO lives in rankings and Search Console. AEO adds a new task: checking where AI tools cite or mention you.
What AEO and SEO Have in Common
AEO builds on SEO. It doesn’t replace it. Both reward helpful, people-first content, strong E-E-A-T, a technically healthy site, content that matches what people want, deep coverage of a topic, and freshness. If your pages aren’t indexed and trusted, no answer engine will cite them. Google says the same: its AI features guidance states that no specific optimization is required for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that the existing SEO fundamentals still apply.
How Do AI Tools Choose Which Sources to Cite?
Nobody outside the platforms knows the exact formulas. The studies do show some patterns:
- Ranking helps, but you don’t have to rank: Only 38% of cited pages ranked in the top 10 in Ahrefs’ March 2026 study, and many came from far lower in the results.
- Related questions count: Ahrefs points to Google’s “fan-out” process, which pulls pages for sub-queries related to the original search. If your page also answers the obvious follow-ups, you have more ways to be picked up.
- Video gets cited too: YouTube made up about 5.6% of AI Overview citations in the same dataset.
- Easy-to-lift formats win: Direct answers, lists, tables and clear definitions are simply easier for a system to pull out.
- Trust helps: Original data, expert input and consistent brand details all work in your favor.
How to Optimize for AEO: 11-Step Checklist
- Answer first: Put a short, direct answer under each question heading, then go deeper. Around 40 to 60 words is a handy target, though no platform has set that as a rule.
- Write headings as questions: People Also Ask, autocomplete and related searches will show you which ones.
- Add a real FAQ: Five to ten genuine questions, visible on the page. FAQ markup is optional, and Google now shows FAQ rich results for only a narrow set of sites, so add it for clarity, not for a guaranteed boost.
- Use schema where it fits: JSON-LD for Article, Organization, Product and Person is the safest set. Check it with Google’s Rich Results Test. Google has said no special markup is required to appear in its AI features, and its newer guide also says you don’t need llms.txt, content chunking or AI-specific rewriting for those features.
- Format for extraction: Short paragraphs, bullets, tables and numbered steps.
- Keep your entity details consistent: Brand, product and author details should match across your site, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and Wikidata, where you’re eligible. Our post on entity-first SEO shows how this works in practice.
- Show your credentials: Author bylines with real credentials, first-hand experience, cited sources, original research and visible update dates. See what E-E-A-T actually controls when you rank well but still aren’t cited.
- Earn mentions elsewhere: Digital PR, reviews, expert quotes, and honest participation on Reddit, Quora and YouTube. Disclose any affiliation and follow each community’s rules.
- Cover the follow-ups: Answer what a reader would ask next, on the same page or in a linked cluster.
- Choose your AI crawlers deliberately: Check your robots.txt and CDN rules for the bots you want citations from, and weigh that against your content-licensing preferences. Our summary of Google’s crawler documentation updates is a useful starting point.
- Keep things fresh: Update stats and screenshots, and show a last-updated date.
Example: What an Answer-First Block Looks Like
Imagine a page that opens like this:
Over the years, search has changed in many ways, and marketers have debated what these changes mean for content strategy. Some argue that a new discipline is emerging…
A reader has to wade through that before getting anything useful. Now try it this way:
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO improves your rankings so people click through to your site. AEO structures your content so AI tools and voice assistants quote it as the answer. SEO helps you get found; AEO helps you get cited. Because answer engines mostly cite pages that are already crawlable and trusted, you need SEO as the foundation.
The question is the heading, the answer lands in the first two sentences, and the whole block still makes sense if it’s lifted out of the page.
Why You Still Need SEO for AEO
The basics still decide who gets considered at all. Fix crawl and speed problems (start with Core Web Vitals), match your pages to search intent, build topic clusters with internal links, earn good backlinks, and write titles and meta descriptions that people want to click. Which Matters More: AEO or SEO?
- Publishers are the most exposed to zero-click, so put AEO next to SEO on the priority list.
- E-commerce teams should focus on product data, reviews and comparison content.
- Local businesses should look after their Google Business Profile, improve their local rankings, and think about voice queries.
- B2B and SaaS companies do best by building entity authority, comparison pages and real thought leadership.
For most sites, the honest answer is both.
How to Run a 30-Minute AEO Audit
- Write down 10 questions your customers really ask.
- Search each one on Google. Note whether an AI Overview, featured snippet or People Also Ask box shows up, and who gets cited.
- Ask the same questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, and record whether your brand is mentioned or linked. Answers change from session to session, so run each question more than once.
- Wherever your brand is missing, compare the cited page’s answer format with yours.
- Fix your top three gaps, then repeat every month in a simple sheet. Keep an eye on Search Console impressions and on AI referral traffic in your analytics (look for visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar domains).
6 Common AEO Mistakes to Avoid
- Burying the answer under a long introduction
- Adding FAQ schema for questions that aren’t visible on the page
- Publishing thin AI-generated content nobody with expertise has reviewed (see Google’s crackdown on spam and AI content)
- Ignoring technical SEO
- Leaving outdated facts around for AI tools to repeat
- Treating one snapshot of citations as a stable ranking
AEO vs SEO: Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the main difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO ranks pages so people click. AEO makes your content the direct answer in AI and voice responses.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Answer engines mostly cite pages that are crawlable, indexed and trusted, so SEO is still the foundation.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They overlap a lot. GEO is about generative AI tools, while AEO also covers featured snippets and voice assistants. Read more in our GEO guide.
How do I get cited in Google AI Overviews?
Publish accurate, answer-first content with a clear structure, show real E-E-A-T, keep your pages fast and indexed, cover related questions, and earn mentions elsewhere. Nothing guarantees a citation.
Does schema markup help with AEO?
It helps machines understand your content, but it guarantees nothing. Use it to clarify, never to manipulate.
How long does AEO take to work?
Featured snippets can move within weeks. Visibility in AI tools is harder to predict and tends to grow with your authority.
Do keywords still matter for AEO?
Yes, but intent, questions and entities matter more. Write the way people talk.
How long should an AEO answer be?
Aim for about 40 to 60 words in the opening answer, followed by the deeper explanation.
Can small businesses compete in AI search?
Yes. Niche expertise, local relevance and genuine reviews can win citations even against much bigger brands.
Bottom Line: SEO Gets You Found, AEO Gets You Cited
SEO gets your content discovered. AEO gets it chosen as the answer. Start with a technically sound, trustworthy site, then build each page around a real question, with clear entities and signals people can trust.
